On April 25, one of my readers is going to be skydiving for the third time to raise money for a charity called SOAR (Speaking Out Against Rape). I wrote about and sponsored her in this event last year:

Here is a video of Sarah skydiving last year:

I cannot watch this video without crying. I am so touched by her dedication to speaking out against rape. As dedicated as I am, you won’t catch me jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!!

Below is the letter that Sarah is sending out to raise funds for SOAR. Her goal is to raise $600. I know that this is a difficult economic climate, but if you have the resources and are looking to support a good charity for survivors of rape, this is a good one. Also, here is the link to her fundraising page.

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my page! After much thought and prayer I decided that I must support SOAR this year. This year so many people are struggling financially, and I was really not going to take on this responsibility of raising funds during such a hard time. But after thinking long and hard about Operation Freefall, I felt the most incredible desire to do my part.

Thinking back to when I first started on this healing journey, if it would not have been for SOAR, I would not be the person I am today. If it would not have been for survivors before me taking the Two- Mile High Stand against Sexual Assault, I would not have received the support and therapy that I needed. I have agreed to raise $600 before April 17, 2009. I feel very strongly that even during this financial crisis, there are survivors out there just like I was, feeling hopeless, lost, alone, and broken..That need the help of SOAR. I would hope that I could help just one person receive the care that I have, and help them grow and become the person they want to be.

Would you please join me in supporting SOAR? I have read lots of stories were people say they have been called to do something…and I never really got what that meant until tonight. I have been called to help others, and the way I can do that is through SOAR.

Thanks so much for your support!!

Love,

Sarah

Sarah WiesAbuse survivor Sarah Wies is going to be skydiving on Saturday to raise awareness about sexual violence. Yes, I said skydiving. She is a braver woman than I am!

She is skydiving as part of Operation Freefall to raise funds for the charity Speaking Out About Rape (SOAR). I have sponsored her in this event, and I invite you to do the same.

Here is what SOAR will use the money for:

  • Extend efforts to provide prevention, recovery, and prosecution information to tens of millions of people, including your community, each year.
  • Expand SOAR’s programs to educate lawmakers, police officers, students and the media about sexual assault.
  • Enhance SOAR’s programs to empower victims of sexual violence.
  • Enhance local services for survivors of sexual violence.
